Symbolism of the Quaich

The Quaich—a shallow, two‑handled drinking cup—has long been regarded as a symbol of friendship, unity, and trust in Scottish culture.

1. Friendship & Hospitality

Traditionally used to share whisky or warm drinks with guests, the Quaich represents open‑hearted hospitality. Offering a Quaich to someone is a gesture of welcome, respect, and shared companionship.

2. Unity & Partnership

Its two handles are often interpreted as a sign of togetherness. Each person holds a handle, reinforcing the idea that the drink—and the moment—is shared equally. For this reason, Quaiches are popular at weddings to symbolise the joining of two lives.

3. Trust & Honesty

Historically, because the Quaich must be held with both hands, neither giver nor receiver could conceal a weapon. This gave rise to its association with mutual trust, peace, and honourable intent.

4. Heritage & Continuity

The Quaich is a vessel steeped in centuries of Scottish history. Giving or using one connects individuals to a long-standing tradition of community, kinship, and cultural pride.
